Kishori Amonkar was born on April 10, 1932, in Bombay and died on April 3, 2017.

She was an Indian classical vocalist.

Amonkar was considered to be one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and is an innovator of the Jaipur gharana, or a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.

Amonkar was a performer of the classical genre khyal and the light classical genres thumri and bhajan.

She trained under her mother, classical singer Mogubai Kurdikar of the Jaipur gharana (musical tradition of Jaipur), but experimented with a variety of vocal styles in her career.

Amonkar was considered one of the pre-eminent representatives of Hindustani classical music.

Her father died when she was 6 years old, leaving Amonkar and her two siblings to be raised primarily by mother, the classical vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar.

She was married to Ravindra Amonkar, a school teacher, who died in 1992.

They had two sons.

Kishori Amonkar passed away at 84 years old.
