Xu Zuyao was born on March 21, 1921 and died on March 7, 2017.
He was a Chinese expert in materials science.
His main interest was on Martensitic transformation and Bainitic transformation, Xu was a pioneer in mainland China.
As of 1983, he was a member and honorable member of International Advisory Committee of Martensitic Transformations and later became a member of International Committee of Bainite.
He was born at rural area of Ningbo, he completed his earlier education at local schools.
After Xu he studied at the Department of Metallurgy, National Yunnan University during 1938–42.
Xu stayed there as an Assistant Lecture after graduation.
Xu Zuyao went to Chongqing and Nanjing, served as a technician at Munitions Bereau afterwards.
Zuyao started to teach at Tanshan Jiao Tong University as Associate Professor since 1949.
Xu Zuyao, then was sent to Beijing Iron and Steel College in 1953.
After Eight years, Xu Zuyao was transferred to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he held successively the post of Associate Professor, Professor, and Dean.
Xu Zuyao was appointed as a visiting professor at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, in 1990.
He was elected as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1995.
He lived a frugal life and never married. He made substantial donations to charity.
Xu Zuyao passed away at 95 years old.
