Bruno Benthien was born on April 12, 1930, in Schwerin and died on November 5, 2015, in Greifswald.

He was a German geographer and Minister for Tourism of the GDR in 1989 to 1990.

Bruno studied at the University of Rostock in 1949 to 1952, Bruno majored in Geography, English Literature and Pedagogy and 1952 to 1953.

Then he revived his degree in geographer at the University of Greifswald.

Bruno was assistant professor until 1959.

He worked as a Lecturer up until 1962.

Bruno was a professor at the University of Greifswald and he published a book about historic corridor forms, population and settlement geography.

Bruno preformed a study on the problem the village had faced, he focused on the field and the economy, which contributed to the development history of the village settlements in the district of Schwerin “.

From the year 1968 to 1983, Bruno was the head of the Benthien Geography Department at the University of Greifswald.

Bruno was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party.

From the year 1968 to 1971 Bruno was Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the LDPD district association in Greifswald.

In 1963 to 1976 Bruno was a deputy of the District Day Rostock until 1990 he held a member of the People’s Chamber.

From November 1989 to 1990 Bruno was Minister of Tourism, then he was the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Trade and Tourism.

After which he returned to teach at the University of Greifswald.

Bruno Received the Order of Merit for GDR and the Pestalozzi Medal for Long Service Award.

Bruno passed away at 85 years old on November 5, 2015, he was buried at the New Cemetery in Greifswald.
