Greta Zimmer Friedman (born Margarete Zimmer) was born on June 5, 1924, and died on September 8, 2016.

She was one of the women claiming to have been photographed being kissed by a sailor and total stranger to her, possibly George Mendonça, on V-J Day by Life photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.

She came from a Jewish family in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Zimmer emigrated from Nazi-controlled Austria in 1939 with her sisters, when she was only 15.

Greta Zimmer Friedman parents (Max and Ida Zimmer) died in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

She took classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and did some work in toy design and dolls’ clothes as well as maintaining an interest in the theater while still doing her dental assistant work.

During 1956, Greta married Dr. Mischa Friedman and they moved to Frederick, Maryland.

Greta Zimmer Friedman attended Hood College, but did not graduate until 1981, the same year as her three children.

She worked for ten years at Hood College restoring books and studying watercolor painting.

She died in Richmond, Virginia.

Greta was buried beside her late husband infantryman Mischa Elliott Friedman at Arlington National Cemetery.

Greta Zimmer Friedman passed away at 92 years old.
