Hans Mommsen was born on  November 5, 1930, and died on November 5, 2015, he was a German historian.

Hans was born in Marburg, the child of the historian Wilhelm Mommsen and great-grandson of the Roman historian Theodor Mommsen.

He was the twin brother of historian Wolfgang Mommsen.

Hans studied German, history and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Tübingen and the University of Marburg.

He served as professor at Tübingen (1960–1961), Heidelberg (1963 to 1968) and at the University of Bochum (since 1968).

Hans married Margaretha Reindel in 1966.

He has been a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany since 1960.

Hans passed away at age 85 in November 2015.
