She wrote several books on children’s choirs including Of Primary Importance. She was influential in the birth and success of Choristers Guild.
Kemp attended Westminster Choir College, where she met her husband John S. C. Kemp. Both were later on the Church Music faculty there.
In memory of John Kemp, an endowment was established at Westminster to fund an annual educational event called the Kemp Symposium.
Helen Kemp participated in the Symposium with her children and other church music notables every year.
Kemp always conducted the final segment of the day-long seminar about church music.
American singing teacher and choir director Helen Kemp died on August 23, 2015 at age 97.
