Liu Wan-lai was born in 1929 and died on February 17, 2016.
He was a Japanese–Chinese translator.
He was active in Taiwan during the martial law period (1949–1987).
Liu Wan-lai translated genre literature, hobby literature (particularly on trains and trams), and manga series including Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato.
All popularity of his translations led to him being described as “a legend” and “a literary demigod”.
Liu Wan-lai studied at Chiayi Agricultural and Forestry Vocational High School.
Liu translated, and taught Japanese, alongside a day job as an elementary school teacher in Dalin, Chiayi.
Various selection of his translations was commissioned by the Dashan Bookstore in Tainan.
Wan-lai published an autobiography, in 2015.
Liu Wan-lai passed away at 89 yrs old.
