Lyra Catherine McKee was born on March 31, 1990, and died on April 18, 2019; she was a journalist from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
She was an editor for Mediagazer and had written for The Atlantic and BuzzFeed News. On April 18, 2019, she was shot dead during rioting in the Creggan area of Derry, County Londonderry.
Police blamed dissident republicans for her death. Mobile phone footage shows a masked gunman, believed to be a part of the New IRA, opening attack with a handgun.
In the immediate result of the shooting, police took Lyra to Altnagelvin Hospital in an armoured police Land Rover, where she later died.
Lyra had been investigating unsolved murders during the sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland of the late 20th century.
Lyra Catherine McKee passed away at the age of 29.
