Mildred Dresselhaus was born on November 11, 1930, and died on February 20, 2017.

She was born Mildred Spiewak and known as the “queen of carbon science”.

She was the first female Institute Professor and professor emerita of physics and electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She has won many awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, the Enrico Fermi Award and the Vannevar Bush Award.

Dresselhaus was married to Gene Dresselhaus, a well-known theorist, and has four children and several grandchildren.

Mildred Dresselhaus passed away at 86 years old.
