Phyllis W. Harmon was born on October 14, 1916, and died on August 26, 2016.
She was an American bicycle enthusiast.
She was described as “The Grande Dame of American Bicycling”.
During 1928, at age 12, Harmon purchased her first bicycle, a $28.00 red, single-speed Ernie McKay Special from Ernie McKay’s Chicago bike shop.
Harmon was one of two girls in her neighborhood with a bicycle and the only one who was allowed to ride her bicycle out of the neighborhood.
Phyllis soon realized that her bicycle could take her everywhere, and cycling became an important part of her life.
Phyllis Harmon passed away at 99 years old.
